SYNOPSIS : As a group of travellers hop aboard The Ghan, world famous and iconic Australian train journey, their "trip of a lifetime" begins.
British train enthusiast Maddie's plans for a long awaited solo Ghan trip are dashed when her ageing mother Alice must join her. Elderly larrikin Tom "does a runner" before his children put him in a nursing home. Don and Cass are recently retired whilst Cass embraces her freedom, Don is lost without his work. They soon discover their troubled marriage is about to reach new lows. After an unpleasant divorce, Susan is bundled onto the train by her son and daughter-in-law who can't wait until she leaves them in peace. Hard working career woman Felicia, sees the trip as a much needed breather and opportunity for "personal growth", as a life crisis looms. And ever professional, dependable train manager Neil, just wants a good woman to settle down with, and sees Maddie as the perfect woman to do it with. Or so he thinks.
As The Ghan moves through the deserts of South Australia to the tropics of the Top End our travellers revel in the luxury and relaxation of train life, share adventures at key stopovers and marvel at their constant companion, the ever changing, mesmerising Australian landscape. But after an idyllic stat, personalities clash, old wounds re-open, lonely hearts struggle and tensions finally explode as each faces their own demons, exposed now for all to see.
Emerging on the other side, our travellers find that friendship, courage and love have triumphed, with a reminder that "you're never too old" for life. Finally in Darwin they celebrate reaching the end of the line, only to find it's just the beginning of the next adventure.
